Workshop on Hazardous Materials Transportation

ESRA Technical Chapter on Land Transportation and University of Bologna have organized on December 1st 2011 in Bologna (Italy) an international workshop on the transportation of hazardous materials in Europe. The motivation of the workshop started from the perspective of the Viareggio accident. More than two years ago, on June 29th 2009, a freight train carrying 14 LPG railtankers derailed near to the Viareggio railway station, causing the more severe railway accident involving hazardous materials transportation recorded in Europe in the last 40 years.
The lessons learnt form the Viareggio accident call for a discussion of the research needs concerning safety in the land transportation of hazardous substances in Europe. In recent years, several breakthroughs were obtained in methods for routing, in risk management strategies, and in models for hazard and consequence assessment of hazardous materials transportation. The workshop aimed at tracing the state of the art in the field, identifying research needs and opportunities. Several selected contributions from academia and control authorities of different European countries were collected. The event was organized also with the support of the European Technology Platform on Industrial Safety (ETPIS), AIDIC (the Italian Association of Chemical Engineering), CISAP and the CONPRICI University Consortium.

Il 1 dicembre 2011 si è tenuto a Bologna un workshop internazionale sulla sicurezza nel trasporto di sostanze pericolose. L’iniziativa è nata dalla necessità di tracciare una prospettiva nel settore due anni dopo l’incidente di Viareggio, il più grave incidente nel trasporto ferroviario di sostanze pericolose avvenuto in Europa negli ultimi 40 anni.
L’obiettivo è stato di tracciare lo stato dell’arte della ricerca in relazione all’analisi delle conseguenze ed alla gestione del rischio nel trasporto di sostanze pericolose. Sono state discusse sia lo stato dell’arte in relazione a metodi e modelli per l’analisi delle conseguenze, sia l’esperienza applicativa nell’implementazione di metodi avanzati per la gestione del rischio dovuto al trasporto di sostanze pericolose. Il workshop, in inglese, ha raccolto contributi di ricercatori ed esperti internazionali e si è concluso con una tavola rotonda sulla gestione del rischio dovuto al trasporto stradale e ferroviario di sostanze pericolose in Italia.
Il workshop è stato organizzato da ESRA, Technical Committe on Land Transportation e Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, con la collaborazione dell’Associazione Italiana di Ingegneria Chimica (AIDIC), del Comitato Italiano per la Sicurezza e l’Affidabilità nell’Industria di Processo (CISAP), della Piattaforma Tecnologica Europea sulla Sicurezza Industriale (ETPIS), e del Consorzio Interuniversitario CONPRICI.
